Information on NPP Temelín 179 / 2007

At Unit 1, a planned outage is under way, that is connected with the annual refueling of ¼ of the reactor fuel. Unit 2 is in operation at planned power level. All auxiliary systems are working in accordance with the operation needs of individual units.

The regular reactor containment leak-tightness test has been completed at Unit 1 today. Its goal was to verify the leak-tightness function of the containment, i.e. its ability to prevent leaks of radioactive substances from the nuclear part of the power plant. The results have demonstrated that the containment structure meets all leak-tightness criteria.
The test is carried out regularly once per 4 years and, in its course, there are setup pressure conditions higher by 70 kPa than the atmospheric pressure in the containment.
The Unit’s 1 outage got this way into its last third. The turbine generator modernization is being completed and additional works related to the Unit restart preparation are carried out. The outage schedule assumes that Unit 1 will resume its operation at the end of September.

The containment (protection envelope) is one of the major safety barriers of the Temelín Nuclear Power Plant. There are located the most important parts of the power plant – reactor and other reactor coolant circuit process equipment - in the containment. It is a reinforced concrete cylinder 56 meters high covered with a spherical cap. The cylinder walls are 1,2 meters thick, the structure of the cap is only by ten centimeters thinner. The internal diameter of the containment is 45 meters. The internal surface of the containment is covered with an 8 mm thick layer of stainless steel that hermetically seals the internal space and, in this way, prevents leaking of radionuclides into the environment.
