ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION
ČEZ Group puts sustained emphasis on caring for the environment and protecting the environment in the area around its facilities. This fact is documented by, for example, a number of biological surveys in various disciplines conducted in the broader area of the Dukovany nuclear power plant. Every survey provides a detailed description of the territory studied, and a list of the species spotted there has been created, which includes a map of the sites where they were spotted, with an emphasis on distinguishing protected and endangered species. This work (concerning, in particular, for example, mammals, birds, fish, reptiles, and amphibians) documents the favourable state of the environment and also serves to evaluate the potential impact of the plant’s operation on the environment. Special attention was paid to the Mohelno Serpentine Steppe National Nature Reserve and its specific conditions, as well as to the support of the national natural monument in Miroslav and the NNM of Moravský Krumlov Conglomerate Stone Area.
FAUNA AT AND AROUND THE DUKOVANY NUCLEAR POWER PLANT
At the power plant and in its vicinity, engineers have long created an environment favourable for the occurrence of certain protected or endangered animal species. One of them is the peregrine falcon, which is a critically endangered species, and which has had a nest on a ventilation stack directly on the grounds of the Dukovany nuclear power plant since 2018. Twice, the falcon pair has managed to raise four young ones, by the same falcon female. ČEZ Group has cooperated with ornithologists to save this highly endangered species of peregrine falcon since 2011 – more than 110 young falcons have already come from the ČEZ Group falcon farm, i.e., artificial nests located around the company’s facilities.
The occurrence of protected beavers near the watercourses in the vicinity of the Dukovany and Dalešice power plants is evident primarily near the nearby discharge water reservoir, where power plant engineers regularly find gnawed or felled trees.
Thanks to the absence of natural predators, there is an abundant population of European hares directly on the grounds of the power plant, and bats gather there in the winter. Reptile visits are also no exception.
FLORA IN THE AREA OF THE DUKOVANY NPP
There is a nuclear vineyard in close proximity to the Dukovany nuclear power plant, as proof of the purity of the environment and an effort to renew original features of local landscape. The vineyard was established in 2018 as a symbol of maturity, longevity, and honest work that yields benefit and use, just like the generation of emission-free power at nuclear power plants.
Also, the power plant’s employees themselves care for the environment around them: under the supervision of experienced growers, they planted an avenue of fruit trees, the produce of which they can enjoy, just like the herbs from the local herbal garden, which is used by cooks when making meals at the in-house dining facility.
The symbiosis of the fauna and flora and the emission-free clean energy at the Dukovany nuclear power plant is symbolised by the deployment of 5 beehives directly in the vineyard. The bees produce around 120 kg of honey every year, from blossoming spring shrubs and bushes, vines, fruit trees, linden trees, as well as from the conifers in the immediate vicinity of the power plant.
