ČEZ Group introduces its first partners to participate in development of electric car charging stations in the Czech Republic

In this year, ČEZ will install charging stations in 50 locations, mostly near major towns in the Czech Republic. The stations will be not only in Prague but also in Central Moravia, South Moravia, West and East Bohemia.

The first partners of ČEZ Group to develop the electric car infrastructure are ECE – Arkády, Dolní Břežany, Group AIG/LINCOLN, Inter IKEA Centre Group, Kaufland, McDonald's, ORCO , Praha 16 – Radotín, Ségécé, TESCO, TNT Express, VINCI Park.

"ČEZ will promote the advancement of electric mobility. Electricity is the cleanest energy and electric mobility will make it applicable in an area that has so far been a domain of internal combustion engines. Undoubtedly, this is also a great opportunity for energy businesses, especially in combination with intelligent grids. We will be involved in developing a network of charging stations, by doing which we will send an important signal for the public to accept electric cars," says Martin Roman, ČEZ Chairman of the Board and CEO. "Logically, our partners will be those affected by urban traffic, that is, operators of parking lots and shopping centres. I am glad that, together, we will contribute to a more environment-friendly traffic and improved urban life," Martin Roman adds.

The first partners have actively joined in the electric mobility advancement pilot project, which is part of ČEZ Group's future energy concept called FUTUR/E/MOTION. In its first stage, ČEZ focuses on collaboration with car manufacturers and infrastructure partners on whose premises ČEZ will develop the charging stations, thus providing the requirement facilities for electric cars. As part of the project, ČEZ Group signed a collaboration agreement with the car maker Peugeot in December 2010. Its objective is to cooperate on promoting electric cars, acquiring practical experience with their everyday operation, and promotion to continued advance of electric mobility. The car maker will provide the project with 65 electric cars by way of lease. ČEZ pledges to develop charging stations. This is the first partnership of this type in this country.

ČEZ plans to install 200 public stations by 2013. In addition to companies, municipalities are also involved in the project. Their involvement in the Electric Mobility project contributes to the expansion of the charging station network, and is based on their interest in promoting zero-emission traffic in cities and towns. Environmental and quality-of-life improvements are part of the policies of many large regions and towns, which is why their leaders are involved in developing electric mobility, be it in the form of direct financial involvement or giving electric cars preferential treatment. "The objective of the concept is to test electric mobility in real operation in a way that is as close to future commercial operation as possible. That is reflected in both the distribution of the charging stations and the technologies used. Therefore, logical partners include not only places where people spend their leisure time, such as shopping and entertainment centres, but of course also municipalities for which development of electric mobility is an important part of their municipal policies. We are ready to talk to every type of partner and search for an appropriate format of cooperation and further advancement of using electricity in transportation," says Tomáš Chmelík, Manager of ČEZ Group Clean Technology Department.

A public tender for the supplier of the charging stations is in progress at present. It will decide which of the applicants will supply the equipment for normal charging and express charging. Normal charging using a special charging station works with the same voltage and currents as an ordinary power plug. Unlike your wall plug at home, it can optimize the electric car charging process, thus extending the car battery life and protecting it from damage.Using this charging station, a car can be recharged in 6 to 8 hours. Express charging uses higher currents and voltage, so the station requires a special power grid connection for this type. The charging is done in less than half an hour.

Electric cars offer a number of advantages. Firstly, the release no emissions of noxious gases (CO2, NOx, etc.) when in operation. Electric cars are also beneficial for their minimal noisiness and much lower maintenance requirements. From the user's point of view, the costs of fuel for electric cars per kilometre are already cheaper than for a conventional car with an internal combustion engine. The total costs of operating an electric car are comparable to those for conventional cars, and can be expected to decrease significantly in future.
