FLOODS IN 2002 ARE HISTORY FOR CEZ REPAIRS OF HYDRO POWER PLANTS HAVE BEEN FINISHED

In 2004 the hydro power plants without pumped-storage (storage and through-flow plants falling into the category of renewable sources) produced 1,192 GWh within the CEZ Group, out of which 84.4 % were produced directly by power plants of CEZ (1,006 GWh).

So-called small hydro power plants (up to an output of 10 MW) produced 175.2 GWh, out of which 30 % were generated by seven small hydro power plants (MVE) operated directly by CEZ, 70 % were produced in the plants of CEZ´s daughter companies (Hydrocez VCE and ZCE). Last year the total production of MVE was all of 3 % lower than in the previous year, when the production had reached 180.4 GWh. This decrease was a result of continuing renovation of the equipment of hydro power plants, whose goal is an increase in electricity generation from small hydro power plants. This work, e. g. at Hydrocez company, includes investments in units from 1920-1930, which had represented a half of the equipment. Even the last, fourth unit of the Orlik hydro power plant started to supply power into the grid on December 13th last year. The unit underwent a complicated process of repair and renovation, and the repairs and reconstructions of the hydro power plants hardly damaged during 2002 floods were completed by putting the unit into operation.

"After two months of fair operation, we can say, that we are finally over the floods, repairs at all affected hydro power plants were finished in 2004," said Ales Tomec, director of the CEZ hydro power plants.

After the destructive floods almost three years ago, most of hydro power plants were disabled and the Orlik and Stechovice plants were completely damaged. Orlik is the largest and most important plant of the Vltava Cascade (output of 4 x 91 MW).

The total damage to the property of CEZ caused by the floods reached the amount of 766 million CZK. Hydropower plants numbered among the damaged sources were the following: Orlik, Stechovice, Korensko, Kamyk, Vrane, the Melnik coal-fired plant, and the Ledvice pumping station of cooling water. Besides the flood damage to production equipment, there was damage to other property (stocks, computers and telecommunications, outbuildings).
