Dukovany, Czech Republic 6 June 2011 —The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), at the request of the Government of the Czech Republic, has assembled an international team of experts to conduct an Operational Safety Review (OSART) of the Dukovany Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) in Dukovany, Czech Republic.  The team of experts arrived on 5 June 2011 from Armenia, Germany, Hungary, Romania, Slovenia, Sweden, the United Kingdom and the United States and will stay in the Czech Republic for the three week duration of the mission.  Together with OSART team leadership from the IAEA’s Division of Nuclear Installation Safety, the team will perform an in-depth operational safety review of Dukovany NPP.

The OSART mission is directed towards a review of programmes and activities essential to operational safety. It is not a regulatory inspection, a design review or a substitute for an exhaustive assessment of the plant’s overall safety status. The OSART team conducts an in-depth review of those aspects, largely under the control of site management, which are essential to the safe operation of the nuclear power plant. The conclusions of the review will be based on the IAEA Safety Standards and on proven good international practices.

The review covers the areas of Management, Organization and Administration; Training and Qualification; Operations; Maintenance; Technical Support; Operating Experience, Radiation Protection; Chemistry; and Emergency Planning and Preparedness.

The Dukovany mission is the 162nd mission of the OSART programme, which began in 1982.  The Czech Republic is an active participant in the OSART programme of the IAEA.
