Almost 90% of households actually save money after purchasing photovoltaics or heat pump. ČEZ Prodej surveyed consumption of 2,500 customers

In the vast majority of cases, households that purchase photovoltaics or a heat pump actually save money and see a significant reduction in consumption. This was the result of an analysis prepared by ČEZ Prodej using a sample of almost 2,500 customers. According to the data, the biggest potential for savings comes from replacing an old electric boiler with a heat pump – three quarters of customers save more than a fifth of their consumption, and six out of ten more than 40%. For photovoltaics with a battery, a quarter of customers achieved electricity savings of more than 40%. Only one percent of customers did not save money after acquiring the technology, likely due to other increases in household consumption.

As part of an extensive analysis, ČEZ Prodej processed data on the annual electricity consumption of customers before and after acquisition of the technology. In total, it monitored data from around 2,500 customers. The same period (length and months of the year) was compared to eliminate seasonal fluctuations. The resulting data confirmed that the vast majority of people save significantly by investing in the technologies.

A third of households that invested in photovoltaics with a battery saw reductions in electricity consumption in the range of 20-40%, corresponding to an average reduction of almost 4 MWh per year. A quarter of households reduced their consumption by more than 40%.

Over 60% of people who replaced their electric heating (mostly electric boilers) with a heat pump reduced their consumption by at least 40%. The most common savings were 40-60%, with people reducing consumption by more than 11 MWh a year on average.

“Photovoltaic systems and heat pumps make it possible to save energy efficiently and over the long term. We now have accurate numbers for our customers. We are pleased that approximately 90 percent of our customers with both photovoltaics and heat pumps have seen tangible and measurable savings,” said ČEZ Prodej CEO Tomáš Kadlec.

The analysis showed at least some reduction in consumption for 91% of customers after the purchase of photovoltaics and for 87% of clients in the case of heat pumps. Where there were no savings, the condition of the housing (e.g. installation of a new type of heating system in an uninsulated house or a house with a substandard heating system) or a change in customer behaviour may have played a role.

The analysis is based only on consumption data at the point of consumption, so it cannot take into account a change in customer behaviour after the acquisition of the technology. For example, when someone starts using electricity from photovoltaics to heat the water in a swimming pool, or with the purchase of a heat pump they enjoy greater temperature comfort in the rooms. Other changes in consumption are brought about by life itself – for example, the birth of a new family member or the departure of children from the house.

The basis for maximum savings is always a professional assessment and design of the project, which takes into account the specifics of each household. For people who need professional advice, ČEZ Prodej offers individual personal consultations, for example as a part of the ČEZ Academy Roadshow.
